Chief Wahoo was actually the controversial mascot of the Cleveland Indians baseball team. The mascot, which depicted a caricature of a Native American with exaggerated features, was first introduced in 1947 and used widely by the team for decades. Many Native American groups and advocates considered it an offensive racial stereotype.
